Many suspension bushings are removed as a complete unit before the polyurethane replacement is installed. Some kits, however, are designed to reuse the original outer metal sleeve. Removing that sleeve by mistake can prevent the new PU bushing from fitting correctly.
When must the original outer sleeve be reused?
On certain control arms or leaf-spring mounts, the original rubber is vulcanised inside an outer steel sleeve. The replacement PU bushing may be dimensioned to fit directly into that sleeve, which therefore needs to remain in the suspension component.
General installation procedure
- Check the kit instructions first: confirm whether the original outer sleeve must be retained. If there is any doubt, stop before removing it.
- Work safely: remove and support the component correctly, wear eye protection and gloves, and work in a well-ventilated area.
- Remove only the rubber and inner sleeve: use the method specified by the manufacturer. Heating rubber can produce harmful fumes and creates a fire risk, so avoid open flames near the vehicle and use a workshop if you do not have suitable equipment.
- Clean the outer sleeve: remove rubber residue and corrosion without reducing the material thickness or damaging the seating surface.
- Lubricate as instructed: apply the supplied grease to the surfaces specified by the manufacturer. Dry installation can lead to noise and premature wear.
- Install the PU bushing: fit the parts in the correct orientation and insert the new inner metal sleeve.
Tighten fasteners to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified torque and, where required, with the suspension at normal ride height. After installation, check wheel alignment and recheck the relevant fasteners.
